Myceen is a sustainable design and research entity focusing on the development of mushroom mycelium-based materials. Based in Tallinn, Estonia Myceen started with furniture and design objects but is currently focusing on the development of building materials.
The production of novel mushroom materials is a perfect example of circular manufacturing and can potentially replace plastics and problematic composites. While using other industries’ leftovers and combining them with mushroom mycelium (the root system of mushrooms) it is possible to grow carbon-negative and compostable materials.
The mushroom material does not contain any chemicals or other synthetic additives, making it perfectly compostable. The growth of mycelium is stopped and the material is safe for humans and buildings.
